Community support is pouring in for the family of 22-year-old Samya Gill after the pregnant woman was shot during a midday shooting on Thursday, June 15 in the 300 block of 37th Street SE.

The Fort Washington, Maryland resident and a second man were rushed to the hospital, where she died from her injuries, but her daughter, Zailey, was delivered by an emergency C-section, according to her grandfather.

“At the time of my daughter's death she was also pregnant and due within a few weeks however, the (trauma) unit had to do an emergency C-section to save my granddaughters life, and unfortunately she's not in the best condition herself,” he wrote in a GoFundMe campaign organized to assist the family.

At the time of the shooting, Gill was in the passenger’s seat of the sedan, which was being driven by the second victim, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries. He managed to get the car to a nearby McDonald’s, where DC Fire and Emergency Medical personnel responded.

Baby Zailey was listed in critical condition as of Friday, June 16.

“This is really devastating for my family, and a huge financial burden,” the organizer of the GoFundMe wrote. “We are asking if there is anything you all can donate, we’d greatly appreciate it. There is no amount too big or too small.

“I just need support (for) Baby Zailey.”

In four hours, more than $2,000 was raised on behalf of the child as she fights for her life.
